The Coach & Horses is probably one of the earliest ale houses in Tenby being within the ancient town's walls. The earliest record of a person licensed to “Kepe a common ale house and to use common selling of ale and beer within the saide town wall of Tenby” was in the 1600’s and it is likely it was at the Coach & Horses or nearby.

Our story

The pub is certainly the oldest continuously trading pub in town having never closed even when renovation has been carried out. Over the centuries, the pub has seen many landlords and landladies some of whom have been real characters.

The pub was visited by Dylan Thomas, the famous poet in 1953 when Mr. Ceslie Stock was the landlord. The poet called at the pub after giving a reading to the local art club excerpt from his recently completed play for voices “Under Milk Wood”.
The story goes that Thomas became so drunk that when he finally staggered out of the pub he left his only copy of the play’s manuscript on a seat in the bar.
